Arriving at his latest theatre, Harold discovers that he has been moved into a dilapidated dressing room. As he applies his make-up and prepares to transform into his beloved Widow Twankey, he reflects on his long career and the changing world around him.
His memories gradually reveal traumatic secrets, loneliness and the grief of losing the love of his life. As Harold prepares for what appears to be an act of retribution against one of his co-stars, the audience discovers the darker truth behind the cheerful world of pantomime.
